Is This the Sound of the Earth Dying?
Posted by Justin on January 17th, 2012Strange sounds are happening all over the world. One part airplane flyover, two parts Inception BAHHH! with a dash of wind wooosh for good measure. The clip above is from Budapest, Hungary last week. There are clips from all over the world in the io9 link below.
Some are even calling it the end of the world. The sound of the seventh seal breaking and hell coming to infest Earth.
On the other hand, the crack team at Ask Reddit seems to believe that it’s all hogwash. But if that’s the case, is it coordinated? Are they being produced to spread panic? Plug an upcoming movie?
If it is a farce, it’s a pretty clever one. All you have to do is take footage of the air and layer in the audio. If you really want to sell it, get some people looking up in the air. Or, if you insist on pulling out all the stops, have someone mention there is a strange sounds outside. For “video proof” it’s about as low tech as you get.

Something very similar was also the trigger for the apocalyptic religious cult’s freak-out in Kevin Smith’s film Red State, and it was done by people.
So it’s not like there isn’t some sort of pop-culture precedence that might not be influencing a clever meme — like sonic planking.

I’d really, really love it if this was a viral ad campaign for the upcoming game ‘Darksiders II’
In the first game the Apocalypse is triggered early and the Horseman ‘War’ is framed for it as the last Seal wasn’t broken.
The upcoming sequel shows us the story of the horseman ‘Death’ and how his behind-the-scenes actions helped War’s situation. The two stories run side-by-side.
It’s probably just a rubbish hoax but i prefer my theory, it keeps me warm at night 🙂
