Concerning your discussion of vigilante superheros: If you are stopping a crime in progress you are not a vigilante, you have a legal right to do so, defend others, etc. It is only if you hear about a crime and then take it upon yourself to go out and find the perpetrator and mete out “justice” that you become a vigilante.
