Geosynchronous orbit: 26k miles up.
Low earth orbit: Between 99 and 1200 miles, shuttle and ISS are at 250 miles.
The point to reiterate about orbit is it’s both height and speed. SpaceShip One does make it into space but is 90% short of the energy required to make it into orbit. This is why the shuttlecock configuration allows it to reenter the atmosphere safely, it’s not having to burn off all of that excess speed with a heat shield.
If we had a beanstalk orbital elevator and you jumped out at 250 miles with a spacesuit and parachute, you would fall more or less down. Complications do arise, though.

Why does Brian always get his feelings hurt when questioned? nothing but ego. I am glad Andrew said, about 22 minutes in, that the Space Shuttle was an amazing achievement.

I am not talking about their attack on his kids. I am talking about when Brian gets annoyed at way he thinks Andrew takes his arguments.

As I said, it’s part of the fun of the show and comedy in general, you overreact, exaggerate and play for laughs. Andrew will deliberately take Brian’s argument the wrong way, Brian will overreact, Andrew will run with it, and it’s fun. If Brian was genuinely upset, do you think he’d still come on the show?

there have been many times where Brian wants to end the discussion because he feels slighted. Brian ought to just blaze through with his viewpoints and not care how the other two take it.

In the Jurassic Park novels there was actually a whole dialogue about recreating dinosaurs as they were or as we imagined between Hammond and the lead geneticist. Awesome book. Awesome podcast.

“In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mr Baumgartner….urged the US Government to divert the money it spends on Mars to environmental projects on Earth.
“A lot of guys they are talking about landing on Mars,” he said. “Because [they say] it is so important to land on Mars because we would learn a lot more about our planet here, our Earth, by going to Mars which actually makes no sense to me because we know a lot about Earth and we still treat our planet, which is very fragile, in a really bad way.
“So I think we should perhaps spend all the money [which is] going to Mars to learn about Earth. I mean, you cannot send people there because it is just too far away. That little knowledge we get from Mars I don’t think it does make sense.”
Earlier this year Nasa landed the Curiosity rover on Mars. The plutonium powered robot will explore the surface of the Red Planet for upwards of 10 years at a cost of $2.5 billion (£1.5 billion).
“That is tax money,” Mr Baumgartner, 43, added. “People should decide ‘are you willing to spend all this money to go to Mars?’ I think the average person on the ground would never spend that amount of money – they have to spend it on something that makes sense and this is definitely saving our planet.”….”

This guy doesn’t even know where some of the science, he used in that jump, came from. Those are some bad comments. Some technology was based on science from Apollo 11. Wonder if Felix thinks going to the Moon was foolish. He owes a lot to decades of space industry science just on steering, being able to communicate and measuring his position for recovery.

If this is true, Felix Baumgartner cant stop saying bad things. Reddit Space links to a Singapore website, the Straits Times, that reports this:
“VIENNA (AFP) – Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian parachutist who broke the sound barrier by jumping to earth from the stratosphere said in an interview published on Sunday he backed the idea of a dictatorship, though a moderate one.
He told Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung that such a dictatorship should be “led by experienced personalities coming from the private (sector of the) economy” to solve present social and economic problems….”
