Watch: Precious 1966 Original Animated Hobbit Film Recovered Online

Sure it already has a beloved animated incarnation, which precede the upcoming epic live action version, but why not whet your whistle with this lost gem. Buried like so much treasure guarded by a fierce dragon is this 1966 animated version of the Hobbit, just discovered yesterday.

    Quite an interesting animation, but am I hearing it wrong that they’re calling the dragon Slag? It should be Smaug unless I’m horribly mistaken.

    A few names are changed — trolls are groans, the goblins are grablins, and Golum is Goloom.

    I blame all those smurfy-looking red mushrooms with the white specks peppering the mise-en-scene.

    Unless I’m mistaken, this isn’t the way the story started at all. There isn’t a single Dwarf in this vid. Still an interesting watch.
